Roland Stecher
Roland Stecher (born August 9, 1962 in Lustenau ) is an Austrian graphic artist , exhibition designer and installation artist .
life and work
Roland Stecher, born in Lustenau in 1962 , grew up in Götzis and Bregenz (Austria). After graduating from school, he completed his training as an advertising assistant. After studying art history and philosophy at the University of Innsbruck for two semesters , he completed his apprenticeship as a lithographer and worked as a freelance graphic designer from 1981 . In 1988 he founded his own design office Werkraum in the Vorarlberg business park with a focus on corporate design and logo development. Well-known trademarks and logotypes from Roland Stecher are z. B. AMBACH cultural stage , city of Hohenems , Soplar, Olina or the Vorarlberg Energy Institute. In 1988 he presented his first artistic room installation in the Saumarkt Feldkirch under the title Spannwerk II . In the following years he invented several furniture patents and utility models, such as the Boga upholstery system and the height-adjustable Stella chair, and in 1998 he received the Austrian State Prize for exemplary packaging for the Qring patent . Since 2008 he has called his design studio Atelier Stecher . In cooperation with Thomas Matt he deals with the development and design of books and exhibition projects.
His works move at the interface between art and design. In addition to designing exhibitions for public institutions, such as the room installation So Easy It Was (2006) for the Jewish Museum Berlin or the themed exhibition Canton Remaining (2008) for the Vorarlberger Landesmuseum, Roland Stecher repeatedly designs personal exhibitions, such as roles (1997 ), Zeitwortzeichen (1999) or Ugbomron (2004) at Galerie Kurzemann . Noteworthy is his social room installation 1740 Ichs for the Sulzberg parish hall, Bregenzerwald (2007), in which he poured the hair of 1340 Sulzberg residents into 1740 transparent cubes.
In 2014 he developed and designed the large Franz Michael Felder exhibition Ich, Felder in the vorarlberg museum in Bregenz. The basis was a simple honeycomb cardboard made from waste paper, which, consisting of thousands of individual parts, was assembled to form a large, free-standing spatial sculpture. The narrative was not only based on historical documents, but also contained new productions and interpretations from today's point of view, such as specially produced audio and video elements that bridged the gap between historical reconstruction and contemporary interpretation.
The exhibition Jukebox.Jewkbox! He designed has been touring since 2015 . through Europe. After the Jewish Museum Hohenems and Munich and the Museum for Communication in Frankfurt, it will be shown in Warsaw and London in 2016.
