Roland Steiner (born May 27, 1984 in Leoben , Styria ) is an Austrian professional golfer who only started playing golf at the age of 14 and quickly developed into one of the most stable players in his country and just before jumping on the European Tour stands.

Amateur career

It took a few years before he discovered golf for himself , but from that moment things went very quickly. After his 14th birthday, he got the golf license at the GC Murtal in Spielberg / Knittelfeld. Roland Steiner has been coached by PGA professional Ralph Hagen since 1998, who guided him through his amateur career and has been with him to this day. Within two years Steiner was named multiple club champion and the best player at GC Murtals. In the following years the "NOKIA tournament series" went up to successful participation in state championships and state championships. He achieved his first full success at the "Salzburg State Championships 2003". Thanks to these achievements and numerous other good placements, the Styrian was appointed to the Austrian men's national team by national coach Gordon Manson after only six years. Unimpressed by his first successes, Steiner continued to develop his playing skills bit by bit, played at international amateur championships in Europe , gained experience and, after just a few months of national team experience, oriented himself towards a professional career. As early as 2004, he played a number of tournaments as an amateur on the professional Alps Tour , was the best amateur four times and, with seventh place at the Qualifying School of the Alps Tour in Morocco, earned full eligibility for the 2005 season as an amateur the most successful year in his amateur career. A national championship title and participation in the European team championship in Hillside ( England ) were the highlights of an eventful year, which he finished third in the ÖGV men's rankings. Then Roland Steiner resigned his amateur status and became a professional.

Professional career

With a handicap of plus 3, the Spielberger felt strong enough in September 2005 to pursue a career as a professional golfer. On his first assignment as a professional, he again earned full rights to play in the Alps Tour in 2006 . In the annual ranking, the Order of Merit of the Alps Tour, he finished tenth. Step by step he worked his way up, with a clear goal of a golf career in mind. The following year it went even better. After numerous top placings, he finished second in the final money list of the Alps Tour 2007. Steiner thus obtained a restricted playing right at the next higher level, the Challenge Tour for the 2008 season. In the same year he qualified for the final of the European Tour Qualifying School the European Tour in the Spanish San Roque Club, where he was placed among the top 70 players. He has thus further improved his eligibility to play for the Challenge Tour.

Successes on the Alps Tour:

  • 2nd place Sestriere International Open 2007
  • 2nd place Schärding Baroque Open 2007
  • 2nd place Maremma International Cordial Open 2007

Since the promotion, Roland Steiner has played consistently well on the Challenge Tour. In 2009 the Styrian, who is now playing for the Fontana GC, has his best season as 28th in the Challenge Tour Order of Merit. In the last tournament he still had the chance to qualify for the European Tour . In the same year he missed the tour card by one stroke in the final stage of the European Tour Qualifying School, which was held at the PGA Catalunya in Girona. 423 strokes after 6 rounds were one too many in the end, so the Styrian had to be satisfied with 33rd place and a partial game authorization for the first European golf league. After a mixed season in 2010, Steiner was able to find his game again in 2011 and achieve his best result so far on the Challenge Tour early in the season. At the ALLIANZ Open Cotes d'Armor ( Brittany ) he finished second behind Phil Archer. This result was surpassed this year by qualifying for the Omega Mission Hills World Cup 2011 together with Florian Prägant.

Steiner has been part of the Austrian pro team since entering professional sports, which is supervised by Anders Forsbrand and Fred Jendelid.

Team competitions

The victory in the qualification for the Omega Mission Hills World Cup is the greatest success of Roland Steiner's young professional career so far and showed what potential he has. After four days, the Styrian and his partner, the Carinthian Florian Prägant , were below par with a score of 24 and were able to leave the second-placed Dutch by 5 strokes. At the main competition in Haikou ( China ) at the end of November 2011, Team Austria took 20th place and thus achieved a respectable result in the concert of the great and proved to be a strong team.
