Rolf Böttcher (President of the Synod)

Rolf Böttcher (born April 19, 1935 ; † November 11, 2019 ) was President of the Regional Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church of Saxony from 1984 to 1996 . In addition, he was active in various other church committees and dealt with the church and monastery history of his hometown Grünhain in the Ore Mountains .

education and profession

After attending elementary school in his home town of Grünhain, Böttcher completed an apprenticeship as an electrician . He then took up a job as a test field fitter at VEB Elektromotorenwerk Grünhain. In 1957, he graduated from the Mittweida Engineering School as an engineer for electrical devices and systems. After further qualification at the TU Dresden as a graduate engineer , he was employed at VEB Elektromotorenwerk from 1969 as head of testing, production and development tasks.

Church offices

Ecclesiastically shaped by the community movement , Böttcher was a member of the church council of the St. Nicolai parish in Grünhain from 1959 to 1978 . In addition, he worked for the Evangelical Church Days in the GDR , so from 1975 a member of the state committee of the Congress and Church Congress. In 1978 he was appointed as a member of the 21st regional synod, elected to the 22nd, 23rd and 24th regional synods in the constituency of Aue in 1984, 1990 and 1996. From 1984 to 1996 he was President of the Regional Synod. His term of office included, among other things, the turnaround and the associated integration of the regional church into the Evangelical Church in Germany , changes in the relationship between state and church and the introduction of changed church laws. In 1991 the regional synod decided to rebuild the Dresden Frauenkirche , and in 1994 Volker Kreß was elected regional bishop. In 2001 Böttcher left the committee.

From 1982 he was also a member of the Federal Synod of the Federation of Evangelical Churches in the GDR and was in turn delegated to the Conference of Evangelical Churches .

Working as a local researcher

In his home town of Grünhain, Böttcher was chairman of the Church History Association. He researched and published on the history of the local church and parish as well as on the former Cistercian monastery Grünhain . In addition to various monographic brochures, he also wrote smaller articles for periodicals such as the Erzgebirgische Heimatblätter . In January 2012, the city paid tribute to Grünhain-Beierfeld Böttchers volunteering with the awarding of the Public Service Medal .
