Rolf Daniel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rolf Daniel (born September 20, 1963 in Kassel ) is a German microbiologist . Since February 2012 he has been Professor and Head of the Department for Genomic and Applied Microbiology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen .

Life

Rolf Daniel passed his Abitur at the Jacob-Grimm-Schule in Kassel in 1983 and then studied biology at the Georg-August-Universität. Under the guidance of Gerhard Gottschalk he attained "the isolation and characterization in 1991 with the work glycerin - dehydrogenase from Citrobacter freundii " his diploma , followed by up to 1994 ongoing promotion in which he deals with the glycerol fermentation in C. freundii employed.

A research grant from the German Research Foundation enabled him to stay in Randy Schekman's group at the Institute for Molecular Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley from 1995 to 1996 . In 2003 Daniel completed his habilitation at the Institute for Microbiology and Genetics at the University of Göttingen, where he finally took over the professorship for Genomic and Applied Microbiology in February 2012.

research

Daniel uses both metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analysis methods to study natural bacterial communities and to identify new enzymes that are used as biocatalysts in the chemical industry . The research in this department is made possible by the Göttingen Genomics Laboratory belonging to it, which has the necessary equipment for sequencing large amounts of DNA and, among other things, carried out a detailed analysis of the causative agent of the HUS epidemic in 2011 , Escherichia coli O104: H4 .
