Rolf Grünther (born February 11, 1951 in Neuss ) is a former German soccer player and soccer coach .
Career as a player
He was discovered for professional football with the regional league team VfR Neuss and moved to Prussia Münster in 1972 together with Hans-Werner Moors . As a defender he was active from 1972 to 1985 in the Bundesliga and the 2nd Bundesliga for Alemannia Aachen , Preußen Münster and TSV 1860 Munich . Rolf Grünther completed a total of 66 Bundesliga games (1 goal) for TSV 1860 Munich and 278 games in the 2nd Bundesliga, in which he scored 22 goals. He played 187 games for Preußen Münster in which he scored 17 goals and 91 games for Alemannia Aachen (5 goals). In the 1984/1985 season he was only used in eight games. Then he ended his active playing career.
Career as a coach
On February 23, 1984, Grünther became assistant coach of Alemannia Aachen, which he remained until June 30, 1985. Then he went to VfL Osnabrück to train the A-youth. However, due to the resignation of Erhard Ahmann due to a heart attack in August 1985, he received a contract as head coach. Under coach Grünther, VfL was one of the top clubs in the 2nd Bundesliga.
Because of a derailment - he knocked the Eintracht player Manfred Tripbacher to the ground after a 1: 2 against Eintracht Braunschweig , who only received a yellow card after a foul on the Osnabrück player Ulf Metschies - he was awarded three by the DFB sports court Locked for months. After a 0-2 cup defeat against FSV Salmrohr, Grünther was given leave of absence as a coach on August 29, 1987. He then took over the training of Arminia Hannover on November 15, 1987 , where he worked as a trainer until April 9, 1989. For the 1989/1990 season he was hired to succeed Peter Neururer as coach of Alemannia Aachen. Since Neururer switched to FC Schalke 04 during the 1988/1989 season, he took over the position of head coach of the Alemannia Aachen soccer team during the 1989 season. He reached the 6th place in the table in the 2nd Bundesliga. After a bad start to the season, Grünther was dismissed as coach of Alemannia after a 0-1 defeat against SC Freiburg on matchday 7 of the 1989/1990 season on October 30, 1989 and replaced by Mustafa Denizli . After an engagement at Viktoria Aschaffenburg , he was again coach of VfL Osnabrück on October 23, 1990 as the successor to Roland Koch . However, he was replaced by Ulrich Sude on August 20, 1991 .
