Rolf Kersten
Rolf Kersten (born July 31, 1935 in Leipzig , † June 29, 1986 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( SED ). He was Minister for Heavy Machinery and Plant Engineering in the GDR .
Life
The son of a working-class family was a trained shipbuilder, qualified as an engineer and later as a graduate engineer. In 1950 he became a member of the FDJ . From 1953 to 1955 he was an officer student in the See People's Policeand later full-time functionary of the FDJ. In 1957 he joined the SED. He worked as a designer in the Warnow shipyard, as the main consultant in the VVB Schiffbau and as a sector manager at the Rostock Institute for Shipbuilding. After completing a course for management cadres, he joined the Ministry of Heavy Machinery and Plant Engineering as a department head in 1968. In 1975 he became Deputy Minister, in 1979 State Secretary, in October 1980 Acting Minister and on June 26, 1981, finally, Minister for Heavy Machinery and Plant Engineering. On June 18, 1986 he was reappointed a member of the GDR Council of Ministers. He died eleven days later after a serious illness.
