Rolf Kluth

Rolf Kluth (born February 10, 1914 in Wilhelmshaven ; † November 14, 1993 in Bremen ) was library director, most recently in Bremen. He is considered one of the most prominent innovators in the public and academic library system in Germany.

biography

Kluth studied history, German and philosophy, and in 1938 in Hamburg with a thesis on The Ehrauffassung in the Prussian army of the 18th century Dr. phil. PhD. During the Nazi era , he and his fellow student Arno Deutelmoser were an active member of the resistance group around the publicist and religious philosopher Friedrich Hielscher . During the Second World War he was seriously wounded as a soldier.

In 1945 he joined the library service. After the clerkship at the university library of Jena and the German library he was (later at the Public Scientific Library from 1948 State Library ) in (East) Berlin operates from 1950 in West Berlin at the former "Scientific Central Library". Since it was founded in 1954, he was librarian at its successor institution, the America Memorial Library . In 1956 he went to Hanover City Library as director . In 1963 he was appointed director of the newly built university library of the Technical University of Hanover and the technical information library that was combined with it .

In 1965, the Bremen Senate asked him to help build the University of Bremen and build its new university library. In 1965, when the university was founded, it was decided to connect the future university library with the existing state library. Until 1977, Kluth was the director of the Bremen State and University Library .

On the basis of its structural plans from 1965, the university library was designed by the university building authority and built from 1971 to the end of 1974. Kluth developed the conception of a scientific library with a substantial collection in an open access list , as he had already started in a similar way in his previous workplaces in Hanover. The users, the advising librarians and the free-standing books should be on the same floor level so that contact could be as seamless as possible. The book inventory of the former State Library of 350,000 volumes (1964) was increased to over two million volumes and media during his time as director.

In addition to his official work, Kluth was always active in library policy, so he referred u. a. on "the close connection between library theory and library research and advocated an epistemological foundation for library science as a legitimate area of ​​responsibility for library research."

Kluth was also chairman of a local branch of the Goethe Society in Bremen.

His grave is in Bremen in the Riensberg cemetery .
