Rolf Maier (born April 11, 1960 ) is a former German soccer player who played 285 games in the 2nd Bundesliga from 1980 to 1992 as a member of SC Freiburg .

career

Youth and amateur, until 1980

In the 1977/78 round, Rolf Maier was appointed to the German national youth team as a player for FV Biberach for three international matches. Working as a defender, he got to know the goalkeepers Uwe Greiner and Eike Immel as well as Libero Bernd Schuster . Then the defensive talent gained two years of experience in the league with Biberach and at the age of 20 accepted the contract offer from SC Freiburg for the 2nd Bundesliga.

SC Freiburg, 1980 to 1992

In the first season in Freiburg, 1980/81, the young player could not get past the defensive players Klaus Bury , Volker Fass and Karl-Heinz Wöhrlin and had to be satisfied with seven appearances. The defender, who emerged from Olympia Laupheim, made his debut in the second division in the away game on August 20, 1980 at Eintracht Trier . In the twelfth year of "Rollo" Maier at SC - 1991/92 - the coaching era of Volker Finke began in the Dreisamstadion . In 27 games, the "fighter" showed his qualities again and thus contributed to the third place. Rolf Maier played his last game in the 2nd Bundesliga on May 17, 1992 in a 3-1 defeat at FC 08 Homburg .
