Athletic career
The talent of the young player Rolf "Olli" Schwartau developed in the youth department and then in the senior area of his home club FTSV Altenwerder. At the age of 19 he moved to the amateur team of the Bundesliga club Hamburger SV. As early as 1964/65, under coach Georg Gawliczek, he was part of the professional team in local friendly matches against opponents such as Rasensport Harburg (September 2, 1964), TSV Buchholz (December 6, 1964) and ASV Bergedorf 85 (March 30, 1965). For the 1965/66 season, the previous HSV amateur was included in the professional squad, just like teammate Helmut Sandmann . The external newcomers Egon Horst , Willi Schulz (both FC Schalke 04) and Manfred Pohlschmidt (Preußen Münster) were brought to Rothenbaum from the football west . Under coach Gawliczek it was enough to increase friendship / training matches, but Schwartau was only used in the Bundesliga under his successor Jupp Schneider. On the penultimate round match day, May 21, 1966, Schwartau made his Bundesliga debut in a 3-1 home defeat against SV Werder Bremen. He stormed on the right wing and formed the HSV attack together with Pohlschmidt, Uwe Seeler , Bernd and Gert Dörfel . For the 1966/67 season, Schwartau joined the SC Sperber. Horst Dehn , Erwin Piechowiak and Peter Wulf also signed the Green-Whites .
The team from Alsterdorf managed to stay in the Regionalliga Nord in 1966/67 with 13th place, Schwartau had scored seven goals in 29 appearances. In their second year at Sperber, 1967/68, Schwartau and colleagues shone with 18: 4 points after eleven games in the first half of the season, before they lost two times against FC St. Pauli (1: 3) and Itzehoer within eight days, in early November 1967 SV (0: 3) gave. In the second half of the season, the performance of the autumn series could not be repeated and at the end of the round, SC Sperber ended up in 10th place with 32:32 points. Schwartau had only missed one of the 32 competitive games and scored seven goals. In the third round, 1968/69, things went down dramatically in the table, in the end Sperber took 17th and last place and went down to the amateur camp together with the two climbers Heider SV and TuS Celle. Schwartau had been in 28 games and scored four goals. The man from Altenwerder also played for Sparrowhawk in the two DFB Cup games against Bundesliga club 1. FC Nürnberg on April 4 (0-0 afterwards) and April 12, 1969 (0: 7).
For Schwartau, licensed football was over after playing in the 1st Bundesliga and 88 second division games in the Regionalliga Nord with 18 goals in the summer of 1969, he returned to his home club FTSV Altenwerder for the 1969/70 round. In his new dormitory he then worked for many years at the local MTV Moisburg in the Harburg district in almost all conceivable functions beyond the usual level.
