The Rolwalingtal is the eponymous border valley to Tibet in the Rolwaling Himal , Himalaya . It runs in an east-west direction, limited to the north by the border mountain range to Tibet, Kang Nachugo , Chekigo to Gaurishankar , in the south there are the valleys of the rivers Likhu, Nupche, Khimti, Khare and Sipring. In the valley there are several Sherpa villages with a predominantly Buddhist population: Simigaon, Beding, Na. The Rolwaling Chu River flows through the Rolwaling Valley . The Buddhist Sangag Choling monastery is located in Beding. Attached to the monastery is a school that offers both Buddhist and secular education.

Below Beding, the Rolwalingtal is a narrow, deep indented valley. Above Beding, the Rolwalingtal widens to a trough valley shaped by former glacier stands.

Agriculture

While field farming dominates in Simigaon, which is climatically possible at this altitude, in Beding and Na predominantly pasture farming with yaks is practiced. However, potatoes and other vegetables also grow in Na (4,180 m) .

flora

Evergreen deciduous forest dominates from Simigaon up to the 3,000 m limit, coniferous forests prevail at higher altitudes , the tree line is at around 3,800 m, above it are low shrubs and alpine mats that reach up to 5,000 m high.

climate

As everywhere in the Himalayas, the climate is characterized by summer monsoons and drought and cold in winter. The main travel times (“trekking” season) are April to May and October to November. Also typical for the south side of the main Himalayan ridge is the daily change from rather dry, sunny weather in the morning and the appearance of fog or clouds in the afternoon: Due to the strong daily warming, winds blow up the valley and lead to condensation from approx. 3,000 m (Cloud formation).

Settlements

The summer pasture settlement Na above Beding

The settlements in the Rolwalingtal are small because of the small agriculturally usable areas and have the character of small villages and hamlets.

  • Simigaon, Sherpa village
  • Dokhang, tourist settlement of around 5 lodges
  • Condition, Sherpa Village, Rolwaling Buddhist Monastery and Convent School
  • Well, summer settlement of Beding, grazing of yak herds

ways

In the valley there is an easily walkable footpath to the glacial edge lake Tsho Rolpa . There are high mountain crossings to the south (Yalung La, 5,310 m into the Khani valley, Ramding La, 5,665 m into the Nupche / Likhu valley), the Menlung La, 5,616 m above Beding to Tibet (north), the Tashi Lapcha , 5,750 m to the Solo Khumbu area.

tourism

The Rolwaling Trek path runs through the valley. From the Tamakoshi there are lodges every 2–3 miles to Na:

  • Simigaon village, several lodges (approx. 2,000 m above sea level)
  • Surmuche Lodge
  • Kelje Lodge
  • Dokhang, settlement of approx. 5 tourist lodges on Rolwaling Chu (2,791 m above sea level)
  • Campsite at around 3,200 m above sea level
  • Conditional, several lodges (3,740 m above sea level)
  • Well, several lodges (4,180 m above sea level)
  • Chhukima Tea Shop (approx. 4,600 m above sea level)

From there, two more days are needed to the Tashi Lapcha Glacier Joch in the Solo Khumbu area.
