Roman Józef Abraham (born February 28, 1891 in Lemberg , Austria-Hungary , † August 26, 1976 in Warsaw ) was a Polish brigadier general .

Life

Abraham trained as an officer in the land forces of Austria-Hungary and took part in the First World War. He joined the Land Forces of the Second Polish Republic in 1918 and took part in the Polish-Ukrainian War between 1918 and 1919 and then in the Polish-Soviet War from 1919 to 1921 . He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1922 , which promotion was dated back to June 1, 1919. He was, as such, 1922-1927 instructor at the Higher Military Academy (Wyższa Szkoła Wojenna) in Warsaw and then from 1927 to 1928 commander of the 26th  Lancers - Regiment " Jan Karol Chodkiewicz " (26 pułk Ułanów Wielkopolskich) in Baranovichi . After his promotion to colonel on January 1, 1928, he was commander of the cavalry brigade in Toruń from 1929 to 1933 and later between 1937 and 1939 commander of the cavalry brigade in Bydgoszcz , where he was promoted to brigadier general on March 19, 1938 .

In 1939 Abraham was initially commander of the Wielkopolska Brygada Kawalerii cavalry brigade and at the beginning of the Second World War he was the commanding general of the operational cavalry group (Zbiorcza Brygada Kawalerii) during the attack on Poland , the Battle of the Bzura and the Battle of Warsaw . After Poland's defeat by the Wehrmacht , he was held in German captivity from 1939 to 1945 .

For his many years of military service, Abraham was awarded the Virtuti Militari , the Order Polonia Restituta , the Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland , the Ordre des Palmes Académiques , the Leopold Order and the Star of Romania .
