Romualdas Krikščiūnas (born July 18, 1930 in Kaunas , Lithuania ; † November 2, 2010 ) was a Roman Catholic Bishop and Apostolic Administrator in Panevėžys .

Life

Romualdas Krikščiūnas studied theology and philosophy at the Kaunas seminary during the times of communist rule . He was ordained a priest on September 12, 1954. After his vicariate in Kaunas, he completed a doctorate in canon law at the Lateran University in Rome from 1959 to 1963 . He wrote the dissertation in Latin on "Apie Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės mišrios sudėties Aukščiausiąjį tribunolą".

From 1963 to 2008 he was chancellor in the diocesan curia of the Vilkaviškis diocese . From August 8, 1963, he taught canon law at the Vilkaviškis seminary for twelve years . Krikščiūnas represented Lithuania's concerns from 1963 to 1967 in the Second Vatican Council and later in the Roman Catholic Church in Lithuania . From 1969 to 2003 he was Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Kaunas. From 1973 to 2007 he was professor and chancellor at the local theological seminary.

Pope Paul VI appointed him titular bishop of Amaia in 1969 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Kaunas and support from Bishop Juozapas Matulaitis-Labukas and Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Vilkaviškis. He was ordained episcopal in Kaunas Cathedral on December 21, 1969, Bishop Juozas Matulaitis-Labukas , Apostolic Administrator in Kaunas; Co -consecrators were Bishop Julijans Vaivods , Administrator of Riga, and Bishop Juozapas Pletkus , Prelate of Klaipeda. In 1973 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator in the Panevėžys Diocese , in a difficult time for the Lithuanian Church of Soviet influence.

KGB activity

Krikščiūnas had already been recruited by the KGB for intelligence work in the circles of the Lithuanian exiled clergy before he began his studies . As Agent Sonne , like his fellow student Viktoras Butkus , he delivered reports to the Soviet authorities during his studies.

His resignation from the episcopal office was granted by Pope John Paul II in 1983 after his subordinates became suspicious. Health reasons and political pressure from the communist government were officially stated.
