Cardinal Braschi-Onesti

Romoaldo Braschi-Onesti (born July 19, 1753 in Cesena , Italy , † April 30, 1817 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Catholic Church .

Life

Romoaldo Braschi, nephew of Pope Pius VI. , was sent by him in 1778 as apostolic legate to the French royal court in Versailles . King Louis XVI appointed him abbot of the Chaage abbey in the diocese of Meaux .

Pius VI created him in the consistory of December 18, 1786 cardinal and appointed him on January 29, 1787 cardinal deacon of S. Nicola in Carcere . Despite his kinship with the Pope, he did not gain political influence, partly because he did not aspire to it himself. After he had received the title diakonia S. Maria ad Martyres on April 2, 1800 , he became Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church on October 30, 1800 , which he remained until November 10, 1801. Cardinal Braschi had resigned from this office after a conflict with Cardinal Secretary of State Ercole Consalvi , who had spoken out in favor of introducing free trade in the Papal States. In 1804 he traveled with other cardinals and Pius VII to the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte in Paris, he worked as a deacon at the ceremony. From July 24, 1807, he served as President of the Congregation for St. Peter's Basilica.

Cardinal Braschi-Onesti was Honorary and Devotional Grand Cross Bailli of the Sovereign Order of Malta and from 1784 to 1817 Grand Prior of the Grand Priory of Rome of the Order of Malta.

He took part in the conclave 1799-1800 , which Pope Pius VII selected.

His brother Luigi Braschi-Onesti , who was made Duke of Nemi , built the Palazzo Braschi in Rome with papal money .
