Ronald Vale
Ronald David Vale (* 1959 in Hollywood , California ) is an American cell biologist at the University of California, San Francisco .
Life
Vale earned a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1980 and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1985. in neuroscience . As a postdoctoral fellow , he worked in the National Institutes of Health's neurobiological laboratory at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole , Massachusetts . Since 1986 he has been Professor of Cell Biology at the University of California, San Francisco , initially as Assistant Professor, since 1992 as associate professor , since 1994 as full professor, since 1998 additionally for anesthesia . Since 1995 Vale has also been doing research for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Since 2004 he has been a full professor of cellular and molecular pharmacology at the University of California, San Francisco.
Starting in 2020, Vale is set to become the new director of the HHMI's Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia, and one of the HHMI's vice presidents.
Act
Vale discovered the first protein in the large family of kinesins . Through the innovative application of methods from biochemistry , mutagenesis and structural biology, he was able to make a significant contribution to the understanding of the intracellular motors that move organelles and produce the movements necessary for crucial cell functions such as cell development and cell division .
