Ronny Loewy

Ronny Loewy (born April 10, 1946 in Tel Aviv ; † August 9, 2012 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German film historian .

Life

Ronny Loewy grew up in Israel and in the Federal Republic of Germany. His father was the literary scholar and exile researcher Ernst Loewy (1920–2002). From 1966 Ronny Loewy studied sociology and philosophy in Frankfurt am Main and Hanover.

At the end of the 1970s, Loewy began working in the program organization for the Hannover Municipal Cinema . Loewy had worked at the German Film Museum in Frankfurt since 1982 , which opened in 1984 and integrated into the German Film Institute in 2006 . In 1987 he was curator of the exhibition “From Babelsberg to Hollywood. Film emigration from Nazi Germany ”. Exhibitions, film series and publications on film exile, the Holocaust and film, Yiddish cinema, Stanley Kubrick , Max Ophüls , Meyer Levin , Helmar Lerski and Victor Vicas followed . From 1992 to 2005 he was co-editor of the magazine Filmexil .

Since 1993 Loewy has been the director of “Cinematography of the Holocaust”, a joint project between the Fritz Bauer Institute, the German Film Institute, both in Frankfurt, and CineGraph , Hamburg. Since 2007 Loewy has been involved in the management of the EU standardization project "Metadata Standards for Cinematographic Works".

His brother Hanno Loewy is a literary and media scholar.
