Rorarii

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rorarii (Latin) were light troops in ancient Rome , which were raised from the last two census classes .

They were without protective weapons, only equipped with javelins and slings , and were often used to initiate the battle through tirailleur fights, but then had to retreat behind the phalanx . For this purpose, the following units positioned themselves offset, which enabled a quick escape from the enemy cavalry . In the later period of the republic they were replaced by the Velites and the Ferentarii .
