Capsarii care for wounded soldiers. Detail from the Trajan column

The Capsarius had in the Roman legion a modern paramedics similar task. He took care of minor wounds , provided first aid to wounded soldiers and brought the injured to the hospital . There he assisted the military doctors . He did not perform any operations himself . The name Capsarius is derived from a wooden box, the Capsa , in which he carried clean towels and other utensils.

In permanent camps, his place of work was the valetudinarium . He also took care of the medicinal herb garden (if any) . The Capsarius was exempted from all heavy work (such as guarding ), and was thus one of the so-called Immunes of the Roman army.
