The Rosa da Fonseca was a passenger ship of the Brazilian Companhia Nacional de Navaegacao Costeira , which entered service in 1962. The ship changed name and owner several times during its service life before it was scrapped in India as Athirah in 1998 .

history

The Rosa da Fonseca was built under construction number 169 near Brodosplit in Split and launched on December 29, 1961. After being taken over by the Companhia Nacional de Navaegacao Costeira on October 28, 1962, it was put into service in November on the route from Manaus across the Amazon to Buenos Aires .

After thirteen years in liner service in Brazilian waters, the ship went under the new name Seven Seas to Cosmos Passenger Service, based in Panama , in order to enter service on the route from Yokohama to Hawaii from August under the charter of the Japanese Mitsui OSK Lines . After two years in service, Mitsui OSK bought the ship from Cosmos Passenger Service in 1977 and renamed it Nippon Maru .

In 1991, after another fourteen years of service , the Nippon Maru was sold as Athirah to Indonesia and continued to be used in regular service there. In 1998 the 36 year old ship was decommissioned and sold for scrapping in Calcutta , India , where it arrived on March 2, 1998.

The sister ship of the Rosa da Fonseca was the Salamis Glory , built as Anna Nery , which remained in service as a cruise ship until 2009 and was then scrapped in Alang, India .
