Roscoe O. Brady (about 1970)

Roscoe Owen Brady (born October 11, 1923 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania - † June 13, 2016 ) was an American biochemist and geneticist at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda , Maryland .

Life

After attending Pennsylvania State University , Brady earned an MD from Harvard Medical School in 1947 with a medical degree. As a postdoctoral fellow , he worked in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine , where he was also an intern in internal medicine . After two and a half years of military service with the US Naval Medical Corps , Brady joined the United States' National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1952 . Most recently, he was Head of Developmental and Metabolic Neurology at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke , an NIH facility based in Bethesda , Maryland . Since 2006, emeritus , Brady died in June 2016th

Act

Brady was essential for understanding the molecular mechanisms of Sphingolipidoses ( sphingolipid - storage diseases contribute). He discovered various enzyme defects in lipid metabolism as the respective cause of, for example, Gaucher's disease , Niemann-Pick disease , Fabry's disease or Tay-Sachs syndrome . Brady developed procedures for human genetic counseling and was able to establish successful enzyme replacement therapies for previously incurable diseases. Brady encouraged the successful establishment of numerous biotechnological companies that manufacture the corresponding therapeutic substances.

More recent work deals with the genetic causes of other neurodegenerative diseases such as mucolipidosis IV , leukodystrophies of previously unknown etiology and new forms of peripheral neuropathy . The previously undetected diseases Childhood Ataxia with Central Nervous System Hypomyelination (CACH) and Ovarioleukodystrophy were identified. New methods to determine the effectiveness of enzyme therapy and new methods of gene therapy for hereditary neurological metabolic diseases have been developed.
