Rose Bampton
Rose Elizabeth Bampton (born November 28, 1907 in Lakewood , Ohio , † August 21, 2007 in Bryn Mawr , Pennsylvania ) was an American opera singer ( soprano ).
Life
Bampton made her debut in 1929 as "Student Siebel" in the Gounod opera Faust . The singer was best known for her dramatic soprano roles as "Sieglinde" and "Donna Anna". From 1932 to 1950 she experienced the high point of her career at the New York Metropolitan Opera .
Bampton was one of Arnold Schönberg's favorite interpreters , who called her three-octave voice a “miracle”. She worked u. a. in the American premiere of Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder conducted by Leopold Stokowski . Bampton sang Leonore in Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera Fidelio under the direction of Arturo Toscanini . In 1937 she married the Canadian conductor and pianist Wilfrid Pelletier (1896–1982). The marriage remained childless. In 1963 Bampton retired from the opera stage and worked as a singing teacher in Montréal and New York.
