The Rosebud Creek is a 6.5 km long right tributary of the Stillwater River in the central south of the US state Montana .

River course

The Rosebud Creek arises at the confluence of its two headwaters, West Rosebud Creek and East Rosebud Creek , 4 km south of Absarokee . It flows in a northerly direction west past Absarokee and flows after a total of 6.5 km into the Stillwater River coming from the west, a right tributary of the Yellowstone River .

The West Rosebud Creek rises on the northern edge of the Iceberg Peak in the Beartooth Mountains in 3140  m height. It flows in a predominantly north-easterly direction through the mountains and meets the East Rosebud Creek after about 58 km. At the upper reaches of West Rosebud Creek are the mountain lakes Island Lake and Mystic Lake .

The East Rosebud Creek has its origin in the 3014  m high mountain lake Fossil Lake . It flows in a predominantly north-northeast direction through the Beartooth Mountains, passing several mountain lakes, including Denny Lake , Twin Outlets Lake , Rainbow Lake and East Rosebud Lake , before it meets West Rosebud Creek after about 58 km.

The upper reaches of both source rivers are in Park County and in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in the Custer National Forest . The lower reaches of the headwaters and Rosebud Creek are located in Stillwater County .

Hydrology

The Rosebud Creek drains an area of ​​1040 km². The mean discharge at the gauge 6 km above the mouth is 11.5 m³ / s. The river carries the most water in June with a monthly average of 34 m³ / s.
