occupation

Rotaie (in German tracks ) is a late Italian silent film that Mario Camerini made in 1929 with the Hungarian Käthe von Nagy , who was successful in Germany, and the Italian Maurizio D'Ancora .

action

A young couple who dared to go in front of the altar against their parents' wishes escaped at home before the pressure started and have taken up accommodation in a shabby hotel near a train station that they cannot even pay for. Both of them are very desperate, and so they plan to part voluntarily in the coming night. The tracks from which the title is given, however, practically save their lives, because a train that rushes past the hotel room window makes so much wind that the window is pushed open and the glass overturned in which the two unfortunate people had already poured the poison for the impending suicide. As if by a wink of fate, the nameless woman and her partner Giorgio understand that this cannot be the right way, and both take to the street on a rainy night. On the aimless stroll through the darkness, the couple come across a wallet bulging with banknotes. Suddenly their lives changed and it was decided to take the money and go to San Remo.

There the young man wants to strain his luck by entering the casino with the money. In the beginning he is still a little lucky and wins more money. Soon, however, the profit slips between your fingers. Suddenly, Jacques Mercier, another man enters their lives. He pretends to help them out with a small sum of money at their next game of chance. But after a brief burst of joy, the stranger lets it through that he is demanding something in return, no less than a night of love with the young woman. After a moment of reflection, Giorgio Mercier rejected the immoral offer and decided to finally put his life on a solid footing. Again the couple get on the rails and continue from the temptations of a casino town. On the train, Giorgio and his wife get to know poor people like her who like to share with them, even without ulterior motives. When he arrives at his destination, the young man looks for work in a factory.

Production notes

Rotaie premiered as a silent film in 1929, but two years later a sound film version was also released in Italian cinemas. There was obviously no German performance before the Second World War. The first demonstrable German presentation of the film took place on March 31, 1972 in the third channel of WDR television.

The German Constantin J. David , Käthe von Nagy's husband at the time of shooting, took over the production management.

criticism

"At 'Rotaie' we admire, above all else, the technology, which is flawless in every respect: the harmony, the fusion and the proportions between the different parts."

- Enrico Roma in Cinema Illustrazione on March 25, 1931

“More important than the plot in this film is the description of moods and situations, of atmosphere and milieu. In Italian production at that time, this film surprises with its turn to realism and everyday life. "

- Reclams film guide, by Dieter Krusche, collaboration: Jürgen Labenski. P. 111. Stuttgart 1973

The lexicon of international film called the film a "psychological drama".
