Constantin J. David (born February 18, 1886 in Hamburg , German Reich ; † February 19, 1964 in Los Angeles , USA ) was a German journalist , film director and film producer .

Life

The son of a Spaniard and a German lived in Constantinople until he was 16 . Back in Germany, David initially showed ambitions as a journalist and writer. He received his doctorate from the Sorbonne in Paris and continued his studies (literature and art) in Berlin and Munich . Then David published the literary magazine Der Weckruf , after 1918 the magazine Kornscheuer . In 1921 he founded the International Institute for Modern Art , from 1922 to 1925 he worked as a producer and co-owner of the film company Greenbaum-Film .

At the beginning of 1925 David took his first steps as a film director with Greenbaum Film as the production company. After only five years in this profession and a handful of moderately interesting productions (including two with his then wife, the actress Käthe von Nagy in the leading role), he turned to other (cinematic) activities again. From 1929 he concentrated on founding the first Italian sound film studios (in Turin and Rome), and soon afterwards he took the same steps in Spain.

In 1936, when the Spanish civil war broke out, David left the country and returned to Turkey via Italy in 1937, where he devised a five-year plan for state filmmaking over the next two years on behalf of the state. David spent the war years 1939–45 in France; on March 28, 1941, the Jewish emigrant newspaper Aufbau reported on David's desperate attempts to get an entry visa for the USA. On May 17, 1944, he was issued a French passport in Lyon . It was not until 1947 that David was able to travel to the USA, where he made two films as president of the small company Orbit .
