The Rotary Youth Piano Competition is an annual piano competition for young pianists (up to 18 years of age) at the highest level , which has existed since 2006 .

The Rotary Club 2006 food Hellweg founded the piano libre eV , which acts as a carrier of the competition.

history

The competition was founded in 2006 by the Rotary Club Essen-Hellweg and is now supported by all six Rotary clubs in Essen.

From 2006 to 2012 the competition was national and in 2013 it will be held for the first time with international participation. Special emphasis is placed on the engagement of children and young people with contemporary music. In addition, the competition focuses on a different composer every year; in 2013 it is Robert Schumann .

The concert concludes with the winners' concert, at which the best interpretations are performed together again. In 2006 the concert was held in the Karl-Ernst-Osthaus-Saal in the Museum Folkwang and in the years after that in the Philharmonie Essen. The event "Excellent Children" grew out of this and is still held today in a special setting. Since 2011, an additional award winners' concert has been held again, in 2011 in the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum and 2012 in the blower hall in the Duisburg-Nord landscape park , and in 2013 in the RWE pavilion of the Philharmonie Essen.

Special sponsors of the competition include Evonik Industries , piano libre eV (represented by Jürgen Lamprecht) and the C. Bechstein Center Essen. The current competition was held from 3rd to 5th May 2013 in the great hall of Evonik Industries in Essen.

As part of this project, every 3 years a child is selected for musical support, who is given a piano for 3 years and piano training is made possible.

Conditions of participation

Each participant has to play two compulsory pieces: A work by the composer who is the focus, which should last around a third to half of the entire performance time. In addition, a work of modernism is required, preferably by one of the following composers: Hans Erich Apostel , Béla Bartók , Berg, Luciano Berio , Pierre Boulez , Cage, Henry Cowell , George Crumb , Denissov, Dessau, Eggert, Eisler, Hartmann, Paul Hindemith , Charles Ives , György Kurtág , Helmut Lachenmann , György Ligeti , Olivier Messiaen , Wolfgang Rihm , Dieter Schnebel , Schoenberg, Schulhoff, Stockhausen, Tōru Takemitsu , Anton Webern , Widmann, Stefan Wolpe , Yun I-sang . The further repertoire is left to the choice of the participant.

In addition, the participants in age group IV will receive a piece that is unknown to them one week before the start, which must also be performed and a special prize will be awarded for the best interpretation.
