The Rote Graben is an artificially created flowing body of water in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district , in the city of Havelsee . It drains the White Fenn Marzahne, an Ice Age wetland and several other smaller lakes into the Pritzerber See and over it into the Havel .

course

The almost six kilometer long ditch begins as a drainage ditch for the lake in the White Fenn north of the village of Marzahne . First it runs in an easterly direction and crosses under the state road 98. Immediately behind the state road, the main ditch gives off a side arm. A little later it turns first to the south and, after it has taken up a ditch, to the southwest. Before the Rote Graben crosses under the state road 98 a second time, it takes up the branch that was previously given up again. To the west of Marzahne, the Rote Graben flows through a boggy wetland, where it receives a large number of smaller ditches and their waters on both sides. At this point, the road 99 is crossed. Immediately after the crossing under, the Rote Graben splits for a second time. One arm runs parallel to the main road to the west and takes in the runoff of some anthropogenic lakes that formed in former clay pits. The second arm makes a wide arc through the moorland and runs south of the first branch. Both arms reunite north of the village of Hohenferchesar . After the drainage ditch of the White Lake , which was also formed in a former clay pit, has been recorded, the Red Ditch crosses under the district road 6953. About 100 meters below the district road it finally flows into the east bank of the Pritzerber See.

In the course of the trench there is a weir that helps to regulate the water level and runoff of the wetlands through which it flows, the White Fenn and the White Lake and, if necessary, is intended to prevent water from flowing back during floods in the course of the Havel. The weir is located directly on the district road 6953 not far from the confluence with the Pritzerber See.

Animals native to the Rote Graben are for example otters , grass snakes , various frog and tailed amphibians , smaller and in the estuary area also larger fish and beavers .

Protected areas

The White Fenn Marzahne, which is drained via the Rote Graben, is designated as an area natural monument . In his full history of digging in is conservation area and in Westhavelland Nature Park . It also flows through some protected biotopes . Below the county road 6935 lies the ditch in the nature reserve Untere Havel Süd , in the European bird sanctuary Niederung der Unteren Havel and in the FFH area Niederung der Unteren Havel / Gülper See.
