Roy Norman Bailey (born May 26, 1932 in Epsom , † April 9, 1993 in Johannesburg ) was an English football goalkeeper . He became known as the regular goalkeeper of Ipswich Town , which in 1962 surprisingly won the English championship under the later world champion coach Alf Ramsey, just one year after promotion to the first division . His son in Gary was also a goalkeeper and between 1978-1987 the "number 1" of Manchester United .
Athletic career
Roy Bailey was born in Surrey in the south of England. He was the fifth offspring in a family of fourteen children and his football career began at the age of 15 in the youth department of Tottenham Hotspur . He signed his first amateur contract with local rivals Crystal Palace , primarily due to the greater proximity to his home.
For the first time in a third division game between the posts of "Palace" Bailey was on March 11, 1950 in the 1: 3 against Torquay United under coach Ronnie Rooke . It was his only appearance in the 1949/50 season and due to his obligations in the military service he was not used regularly for a long time. This changed in March 1953 when he became the new regular goalkeeper under the new coach Laurie Scott . Three years later he moved to Ipswich Town , which at that time was also only in the third highest English division.
Bailey was quickly the new "number 1" in Ipswich and under the later world champion coach Alf Ramsey , he was promoted to the second division in 1957 and four years later the march through to the top division . Completely surprisingly, Ipswich Town won the English championship as a first division promoter in the 1961/62 season . Bailey completed 37 of 42 league games - Wilf Hall represented him in the five remaining games . The club's form curve then showed down again and after relegation in 1964 from the first division , Bailey played his last game for Ipswich on September 23, 1964 in the 1: 4 against Coventry City in the League Cup .
After the end of his professional career, Bailey emigrated to South Africa, where his son Gary - later under contract with Manchester United for many years - learned his goalkeeping trade. In April 1993, Bailey died in Johannesburg .
