Roy Hughes, Baron Islwyn
Royston John Hughes Baron Islwyn, DL (* 9. June 1925 in Pontllanfraith ; † 19th December 2003 ) was a British politician of the Labor Party in Wales and organizer of trade unions . He was an MP for Newport constituency from 1966 to 1983 and MP for Newport East from 1983 until his retirement in the 1997 general election . He then became a life peer .
Early life
Hughes was born in the Monmouthshire town of Pontllanfraith , north of his future constituency, Newport, and worked as a miner from 1940 to 1943. He graduated from Pontllanfraith Grammar School. He then joined the British Army and served in the 2nd Battalion of the Welch Regiment .
After demobilization in 1946 was Hughes member of the Labor Party and moved to Coventry , where he worked as manager for the Standard Motor Company was active, gained a degree of Ruskin College of the University of Oxford and was 1957-1966 Administrator for standard motor. He then became union chairman and was an officer in the TGWU from 1959 to 1966 . Hughes was Councilor of Coventry City Council and Secretary of the Coventry Labor Party from 1962.
Parliamentary career
In the 1966 general election, he was elected to the House of Commons as a member of the Newport constituency . He replaced the former Interior Minister Sir Frank Soskice and won a large majority of the votes. In his inaugural address, he praised the government at the time for supporting pensioners.
He later became known for his pro-unionist views and support for the rights of the Palestinian people. He claimed that he had to read the Morning Star to get a fair picture of the industry. He sponsored a badger protection bill in 1991 and was an honorary member of several football and cricket teams.
In 1994 he was one of six Labor MPs who voted against reducing the age of consensual contact for homosexuals, even 18. At that time, the corresponding age was 21.
On October 25, 1997, Hughes was named life peer as Baron Islwyn , of Casnewydd in the County of Gwent .

Hughes married Marion Appleyard in 1957. They had three daughters.
