Andreas Gottlob Rudelbach (born September 29, 1792 in Copenhagen ; † March 3, 1862 in Slagelse ) was a German-Danish Lutheran theologian . He is considered an important figure in the formation of Neo-Lutheranism in the 19th century.

Life

Rudelbach grew up in Copenhagen as the son of a craftsman who immigrated from Saxony , visited the metropolitan cities and studied classical languages and Protestant theology at the University of Copenhagen . In 1822 he received his doctorate. phil. The dissertation on principles of ethics still shows influences from Friedrich Schleiermacher . In 1823 he traveled through Germany, France and Switzerland . After his return he came under the influence of Nikolai Grundtvig . Together they published the Theologisk Maanedskrift in 1825-28 in order to scientifically combat neology and rationalism in all directions and significant phenomena. For the renewal of Lutheranism in the Danish Church , Rudelbach also published a Danish translation of the Augsburg Confession and the Apology . Through his lectures at the university, he also had an impact on the young Hans Lassen Martensen .

Since 1827 an active employee at the Evangelical Church newspaper published by Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg , Hengstenberg recommended him in 1829 as Superintendent and Consistorial Councilor to Glauchau in the Schönburg Recess Lords belonging to Saxony . At his inaugural sermon in Dresden, Rudelbach provoked with the accusation that the rationalistic Saxony was a land of the living dead. In the 16 years of his effectiveness in Glauchau, Rudelbach did a lot to anchor the revival movement in the regional church of Saxony and then, in a flowing transition, the new confessionalism. The "Muldenthal Pastoral Conference " founded in 1831 served this purpose in particular, which became the nucleus of the General Evangelical-Lutheran Conference (1868), from which the Lutheran World Federation developed in 1947 . His most important work Reformation, Lutherthum und Union (1839) was devoted to the rejection of the Old Prussian Union . From 1840 Rudelbach and Ferdinand Guericke published the magazine for the entire Lutheran theology and church , to which he contributed many articles and reviews until his death. In 1841 the University of Erlangen honored Rudelbach with an honorary theological doctorate.

In protest against the abolition of the Apostolicum demanded by the consistory (cf. his Ueber the meaning of the apostolic symbolum , Leipzig 1844) at the confirmation and against the support of the German Catholics , Rudelbach resigned his office in 1845 and returned to Copenhagen, where he lectured again held. However, there was an open break with Grundtvig, who had since developed in a more liberal direction. In numerous writings he now opposed Grundtvig's church reform program. The theological faculty under the leadership of Henrik Nicolai Clausen , whom Rudelbach had attacked in a pamphlet in 1828, prevented a permanent position desired by King Christian VIII . In 1848 Rudelbach became pastor in Slagelse . When he cited Søren Kierkegaard in his book on civil marriage ( Om det borgerlige Ægteskab , 1851) , the latter reacted by rejecting any political interest.
