Rudi Scheuermann (born September 25, 1929 in Neustadt an der Haardt ; † March 10, 2016 in Koblenz ) was a German sculptor .

Life and work

Rudi Scheuermann around 1960

Rudi Scheuermann was born into a stonemason family, he had six siblings and his father was a stonemason. After an apprenticeship as a stonemason from 1944 to 1948 in Frankenthal and Ludwigshafen , he attended the Landeskunstschule in Mainz from 1949 to 1954 . There he passed his state examination and was a master class student. In 1955 he attended the University of Fine Arts in Munich . Free studies in Switzerland and France followed. From 1956 to 1958 he took a studio grant from the Mainz Ministry of Culture in Koblenz , where he has lived and worked as a freelance artist since then (in the Rübenach district ). In 1960 he took part in the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg and in 1972 in an International Sculptor Symposium in Rome . Rudi Scheuermann died on March 10, 2016 in Koblenz.

For Rudi Scheuermann, sculpture was an inner necessity of life: “For me, sculpture is such a fascinating, albeit difficult and slow, thing that I could never do it after work. I firmly believe that hobby and art are mutually exclusive. Is it a hobby, is it not an art; but if it is art, it can never be a hobby. Do you have a hobby of sculpture? What normal person pursues a hobby that consists of 90 percent dust, dirt, noise, failure, anger with art politics, anger with the media, sometimes also from need and despair? "(Rudi Scheuermann 2005)

Works

The first exhibition participations took place in the late 1950s in Kaiserslautern ( Pfalzgalerie ), Mannheim (Kunsthalle), Koblenz (AKM) and Gorizia , Italy (Biennale der Jugend). His first state commission was in 1957 to design the fountain in the Koblenz justice building. Since then he has created numerous works of art in public spaces, among others in Neuwied , Oberwesel (sculpture park), Koblenz (1967: reconstruction of the figures above the portal of the former Dominican monastery , 1975: Baldwin monument on the Balduin Bridge , 1978: Rittersturz monument , and some fountains) . In 1967 he presented his works for the first time in a solo exhibition in the Teufel gallery in Koblenz. From 1970 to 1972 he took part in three “International Sculptor Symposia” in Kaiserslautern, in Saarland ( Street of Sculptures (St. Wendel) ) and in Rome / Tivoli.
