Rudolf Berthold (materials tester)

Rudolf Berthold (born May 22, 1898 in Stuttgart , † January 20, 1960 in Tübingen ) was a German engineer and professor . He was a pioneer of non-destructive materials testing and founder of today's company Berthold Technologies , a manufacturer of measuring devices for ionizing radiation .

Life

After studying engineering, Rudolf Berthold began his professional activity in the X-ray Institute of the Technical University of Stuttgart under Richard Glocker . Later he worked for the companies Koch & Sterzel in Dresden and Siemens & Halske in Berlin , which were also active in the technical application of X-rays . There he developed an X-ray device by 1932 that met the requirements of non-destructive material testing .

In 1933 he founded the Society for the Promotion of Non-Destructive Testing Methods, which operated the X-ray unit at the State Materials Testing Office in Berlin-Dahlem , which later became the Reich X-ray Unit. In addition to the use of X-rays, methods without the use of ionizing radiation such as magnetic particle testing and the use of ultrasound were also developed there.

During the Second World War , Berthold ended up in Bad Wildbad . There he founded the laboratory Prof. Dr. Rudolf Berthold, today's Berthold Technologies , which he headed until his death in 1960.
