Rudolf Enderlein (born February 21, 1908 in Dresden , † September 10, 1985 in Bautzen ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Rudolf Enderlein spent his childhood and youth in Dresden and from 1915 in Gnaschwitz near Bautzen.

Enderlein began to carve animal sculptures out of wood at an early stage, examples date back to around 1917. However, he initially had to do without turning his artistic talent into a profession. At the request of his parents, he trained as a locksmith from 1922 , and then began an apprenticeship as a wood carver in Bautzen in 1925.

From 1930 to 1931 Enderlein took lessons at the wood carving school Bad Warmbrunn (Lower Silesia) with Professor Cirillo Dell'Antonio . From 1932 he stayed in Switzerland and from 1933 attended the Basel School of Applied Arts for four semesters . There he was a student of Otto Meier and worked with Beate Gasser, Josef Nauer and Paul Bay. Study trips took him to Paris , England , Holland , Belgium and Italy .

Enderlein returned to Germany in 1935 and since then has worked as a freelance sculptor in Bautzen.

From 1946 he participated in the repair of the war damage, for example in the Ortenburg he restored the stucco ceiling in the audience hall and the Matthias Corvinus monument on the tower . He also made exterior stucco additions to house facades in the old town .

Rudolf Enderlein was married to the jewelry designer Charlotte Unterbeck († 1977) from Leipzig since August 1940. Both were buried in the Protschenberg cemetery in Bautzen.

Works

Rudolf Enderlein created busts, small sculptures and sculptures , especially animal representations, from stone, bronze, plaster cast, wood and clay. Many of his works enrich the street scene in the cities of Bautzen, Görlitz , Hoyerswerda and Berlin, among others .
