Hirth du Frênes was the son of the notary Georg Hirth and his wife Louise Drevelle du Frênes. The sinologist Friedrich Hirth and the writer Georg Hirth were his brothers. Hirth borrowed his nickname "du Frênes" from his mother's family name.

At the age of 15, Hirth joined August von Kreling at the Nuremberg School of Applied Arts in 1861 . Four years later, with recommendations from his teachers, Hirth switched to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and became a student of Hermann Anschütz . The following year he joined Arthur von Ramberg's class , with whom he stayed until his death in 1875. In Ramberg's courses, Hirth was a fellow student of Theodor Alt , Johann Sperl , Fritz Schider and Wilhelm Leibl for several years .

In 1866, Hirth founded a joint studio in Munich with Alt, Leibl and Sperl. This circle of friends was then also the core cell of the later so famous Leibl circle . In addition, Hirth made friends with Otto Seitz and T. Steinhausen and thus acted as a link between the artists of Munich realism .

Around 1880 Hirth went on a long study trip to Holland . This trip lasted five years and took him to all the important studios, galleries and museums in Holland, Belgium and France. In the summer of 1885, Hirth returned to Germany and, after a short stay in Munich, settled in Dießen am Ammersee .

Hirth was artistically - like his friends and colleagues - under the influence of Leibl. Even Leibl's turn to Gustave Courbet had an impact on Hirth's work. Although Hirth was also committed to Frans Hals in the Netherlands . When the Leibl-Kreis dissolved in the summer of 1876, Hirth lost his inspiration and his pictures lost their quality. From then on, Hirth switched to portraits and earned his living with them. However, more and more often he was unable to achieve his usual artistic level.

Rudolf Hirth du Frênes spent the last years of his life in Miltenberg am Main, where he died on May 1, 1916 at the age of almost 70.

In the museum town of Miltenberg am Schnatterloch some of his works are on display in the gallery.
