Friedrich Hirth (Sinologist)
Friedrich Hirth (born April 16, 1845 in Graefentonna , Saxony-Gotha , † January 10, 1927 in Munich ) was a German-American sinologist and historian .
Life
He studied in Leipzig , Berlin , and Greifswald (dissertation 1869). From 1870 to 1897 he was in the service of the Chinese maritime customs. In 1902 he was appointed to the newly established Chair of Chinese at Columbia University in New York City . In 1898 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .
The painter Rudolf Hirth du Frênes and the writer Georg Hirth were his brothers.
The majority of the Hirth collection of the Berlin State Library - Prussian Cultural Heritage is in Krakow .
