Rudolf Hradil (born April 1, 1925 in Salzburg , † October 26, 2007 in Vienna ) was one of the most important Austrian painters , printmakers, draftsmen and watercolorists. Since 1964 he was an artist member of the Vienna Secession and lived and worked in Salzburg and Vienna.

biography

Rudolf Hradil came into contact with the fine arts in his parents' house in what is now the Salzburg district of Morzg . His father was a drawing teacher, his mother had studied painting with Leo Putz in Weimar, and his uncle worked as an architect. Rudolf Hradil first began to draw freely while he was a prisoner of war and from then on wanted to be a painter.

Between 1947 and 1951 Hradil studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Robin C. Andersen , Herbert Boeckl and Albert Paris Gütersloh . A scholarship took him to Paris from 1951 to 1952. There he was tutored by Fernand Léger and discovered his drawing 'scribble style' as well as his fondness for urban landscapes. During his studies in Vienna and during his stay in Paris, he exchanged letters intensively with his fellow student Hertha Jennewein, later Hertha Jugl-Jennewein .

In London, Rudolf Hradil learned all etching techniques on a grant from the British Council in 1959/1960 and developed a particular liking for engraving with drypoint.

Inspired by the Bauhaus artist Max Peiffer Watenphul, Rudolf Hradil learned watercolor painting around 1964 and perfected his technique of color lithography.

Many trips took Rudolf Hradil to Italy, Greece, France, Berlin and New York - but his particular love was Venice and Rome. Often he went to the periphery of the cities and showed sights worth seeing from a special point of view, but not the mere sight. Details of modern, technical life as well as so-called 'civilization garbage' can be found in his pictures again and again. While Hradil only made sketches on site and kept the lighting moods and colors of the respective locations in mind, he always finished his pictures in the hotel room or later in his studio.

Rudolf Hradil was particularly fond of etching as a synthesis between craft and artistic expression. He printed his sheets on his own press and considered the possibility of being able to produce many equivalent copies of a work to be an important social aspect. Today, Hradil's printing press is located in the graphic workshop in Salzburg's Traklhaus, where scholarship holders of the scholarship named after him can implement their ideas and works in his favor.

Rudolf Hradil received several awards from the city and state of Salzburg (including the Golden Medal of Merit of the State of Salzburg in 1990, the Golden Medal of Honor of the State of Salzburg in 2005 and the Medal of the City of Salzburg in 2005).

Hradil died on October 25, 2007 in Vienna.
