Kaske was one of the initiators of the Initiative M for “Mitbestimmen”. The aim of the initiative was to create the Youth Trust Council Act to ensure that young people were represented independently in the company. After this law was passed in parliament in 1972, Kaske was one of the first youth representatives in Austria. From 1977 to 1978 he graduated from the Social Academy of the Vienna Chamber of Labor .

Career in the union

In 1987 Kaske was elected central secretary of the hotel, restaurant and personal service union (HGPD) and in the same year became a member of the ÖGB federal board. Kaske negotiated the collective agreement increases for employees in the hotel and hospitality industry in the social partner rounds. He pushed through the introduction of the five-day week in tourism in Austria in May 1992.

From April 1995 Kaske was chairman of the HGPD union. When the federal government in Schühl planned social cuts in 2000, the union threatened a general strike and Kaske backed this up with the statement: “Our union is armed. Once this army of unemployed marches, the republic is on fire ” .

From December 2006 to December 2012, Kaske was chairman of the transport and services union vida . Under his chairmanship, vida pushed through a minimum wage of 1,300 euros in various industries, for example in the cleaning industry and in the hotel and hospitality industry. From March 2013 to April 2018 Rudolf Kaske was President of the Vienna Chamber of Labor and the Federal Chamber of Labor . His successor in both offices was Renate Anderl .

In November 2017, he announced that he would retire from April 2018 for private reasons and resign from the AK presidency.

Kaske was a member of the supervisory board of BAWAG from 1989 to 2006 , which became public in March 2006 due to the so-called Caribbean affair . Although Kaske was sometimes even the vice-chairman of the supervisory board, he said he had no knowledge of the controversial deals.
