Rudolf Knoblauch

Rudolf Knoblauch (* 1951 in Aarau ; resident in Oberentfelden and Wohlen ) is a Swiss diplomat . He was the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria from 2001 to 2004 , Ambassador to Bulgaria from 2004 to 2006 , Ambassador to Mexico from 2010 to 2014 and the Swiss Ambassador to Norway from 2014 to 2016 .

Life

Rudolf Knoblauch studied economics at the University of St. Gallen from 1972 to 1979 and completed his studies with a degree in "Foreign Economic Policy and Developing Countries". In 1980 he received his doctorate from the University of St. Gallen.

Rudolf Knoblauch has worked for the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) since 1979 . During his first phase of training there, he was deployed in Bern and Madrid . From 1981 to 1985 he was embassy secretary at the Swiss delegation to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris , from 1985 to 1987 first employee at the embassy in Caracas . From 1988 to 1990 he was employed at the Federal Office for Foreign Trade (BAWI). His next assignment abroad was as counselor and first employee of the ambassador in Riyadh . He returned to Madrid in 1993, first as counselor and first assistant, from 1995 in the rank of minister (equivalent to a deputy ambassador). From 1997 to 2001 he was Minister in Geneva at the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

Rudolf Knoblauch's first assignment as Swiss ambassador was in 2001 in the new embassy in Abuja , Nigeria, after moving from Lagos . He was co-accredited in Benin , Chad and Equatorial Guinea . From 2004 he was also accredited with the West African Economic Community in Abuja. The embassy moved to Abuja in stages and lasted from autumn 2000 to June 2004. After it became known that in 2003 he had initiated the sale of a property in Lagos below its value to the embassy's lawyer of trust, the federal criminal court was in charge 2005 a criminal investigation because of an unfaithful office management and passive corruption, and garlic sat for three days in custody . The proceedings were discontinued in 2009 because, according to the discontinuation order, there were no indications of an unlawful intention to gain advantage or improper conduct of office. The costs of the proceedings were borne by the federal government and Knoblauch was awarded a indemnity sum for the unjustified pre-trial detention and the excessive length of the investigation.

At the end of September 2004, Knoblauch became ambassador to Sofia , succeeding Pierre Luciri , who was retiring. In 2006 he was replaced by Thomas Feller in Bulgaria . Back in Bern, Rudolf Knoblauch became ambassador for human rights issues in the FDFA. In 2010 he succeeded Urs Breiter as ambassador to Mexico. Knoblauch last worked as Swiss ambassador in Oslo , co-accredited for Iceland , where he represented Switzerland from December 2013 until his retirement in December 2016. Alain-Denis Henchoz became his successor in Norway in January 2017 .
