Rudolf Korte

Rudolf Korte (born June 8, 1878 in Herford , † August 15, 1950 in Essen ) was a German horticultural scientist and from 1921 to 1938 the executive chairman and horticultural director of the city of Essen.

Life

After graduating from high school, Korte trained as a gardener. He trained in Lippstadt , Luxembourg , Baden-Baden , Stuttgart and Geneva and then studied horticulture in Berlin-Dahlem . In 1905 he became a city gardener in Berlin-Friedenau and a year later he became a certified horticultural inspector. In 1910 his last job in Berlin was in Steglitz as a municipal gardening inspector.

In 1919, Korte was a founding member of the Essen city association of allotment gardeners . In 1914, Korte was appointed municipal gardening director in Essen, but was only able to begin his service there on March 1, 1921 due to the First World War . In 1925, Korte took over the gardening management of the Botanical Garden, which opened in 1927 as the forerunner of the Grugapark .

Later he was involved in the design of the 1938 Reichsgartenschau that took place there , especially the colonial plant show. He was also involved in the design and construction of the south-west cemetery , the park cemetery in Huttrop and the terrace cemetery in Schönebeck .

Korte retired early, but continued to work as a freelance garden designer.

A memorial stone at the vantage point, erected by the city of Essen on the Korte cliff named after him , commemorates him.
