Rudolf Müller (born June 24, 1931 in Schmottseiffen , Lower Silesia ; † December 25, 2012 in Görlitz ) was Bishop of Görlitz .

Life

Rudolf Müller, son of a merchant family, was born in Schmottseiffen in what is now the Polish part of Silesia. He received after the expulsion on March 7, 1955, the diaconate and on 17 July 1955 in Neuzelle the priesthood and worked from 1955 to 1964, first as chaplain in Wittichenau , later in Hoyerswerda and Gorlitz . In 1964 he became the rector of the Görlitz catechetical seminar and was then until 1987 full professor and head of the pastoral office.

May 19, 1987 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Nasai and Auxiliary Bishop of the Apostolic Administrator of Görlitz. The Apostolic Administrator, Bishop Bernhard Huhn , donated him episcopal ordination on July 1, 1987; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops Georg Weinhold ( Diocese of Dresden-Meißen ) and Hans-Reinhard Koch ( Episcopal Office Erfurt-Meiningen ).

With the establishment of the Diocese of Görlitz on June 27, 1994, he was appointed by John Paul II as the first bishop of the newly founded diocese and on September 3, 1994 he was appointed to this office. His motto was: In Gratia cantantes Deo (“You are in grace, therefore God sing”) - a quote from the Letter to the Colossians ( Col 3:16  EU ).

Rudolf Müller was considered an important liaison between the Church in Germany and Poland. He was a great advocate of German-Polish reconciliation. For many years he was active in the German Bishops 'Conference for relations with the Polish Bishops' Conference . After the expansion of the European Union in 2004, Bishop Müller developed close cooperation between the churches in the German-Polish border region. One of his most famous initiatives was a joint Corpus Christi procession by German and Polish Catholics. In his diocese, Müller was considered a popular theologian who was popular with the faithful.

Müller found his final resting place in the episcopal and chapter tomb of St. James' Cathedral .
