Rudolf Maria Brandl

Rudolf Maria Brandl (born July 10, 1943 in Stockerau ; † October 3, 2018 in Vienna ) was a German ethnomusicologist .

Life

Brandl studied musicology , African studies , ethnology and philosophy at the University of Vienna from 1962 . In 1972 he received his doctorate in comparative musicology with Walter Graf on the subject of "fairy tale songs from the Ituri forest". From 1962 to 1971 he studied violin at the Vienna Conservatory and composition at the Vienna Music Academy . From 1962 to 1975 Brandl was co-director of the ensemble for new music “Die Kontraste” and a freelancer for the ORF and the International Music Center IMZ. From 1966 to 1975 he worked as a research assistant in the phonogram archive of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.

From 1975 to 1982 he was a research assistant at the Free University of Berlin (music ethnology) with Kurt Reinhard . During this time he was a visiting professor at Tampere University in Finland in 1978 . In 1989, however, he was visiting professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece.

In 1982 Brandl completed his habilitation in comparative musicology at the Free University of Berlin on the subject of "The Lyric Music of Karpathos ". In 1982 he became professor for ethnomusicology at the University of Göttingen . He retired in 2008.

Brandl died on October 3, 2018 after a brief serious illness in Vienna.
