Rudolf Reinhardt (born January 20, 1928 in Stuttgart , † June 19, 2007 in Stuttgart-Steinhaldenfeld ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian , church historian and university professor.

life and work

At the age of 16, Reinhardt was drafted as an anti-aircraft helper. After the end of the war he made up his Abitur at the Stuttgart Kepler-Gymnasium and began studying theology and philosophy at the University of Tübingen .

In 1952 Reinhardt was ordained a priest of the Rottenburg diocese in Ellwangen and then worked for a short time as vicar in Neckarsulm . He returned to Tübingen for the winter semester of 1953/54. There he took up a position as a tutor at the Wilhelmsstift and at the same time devoted himself to his doctorate. In 1958, with a thesis supervised by Karl August Fink on the Benedictine Abbey of Weingarten, he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD. On November 1, 1958, Reinhardt took up an assistant position at the Tübingen Catholic-theological faculty and at the same time became parish administrator in Dusslingen . In 1963 he completed his habilitation in Tübingen with a thesis on the Konstanz Monastery .

After several unsuccessful appointment procedures, Reinhardt was appointed to the extraordinary professorship for church history at the Philosophical-Theological University of Bamberg in May 1967 . In the 1970/71 winter semester he switched to the chair of his now retired professor Fink at the University of Tübingen. Until his retirement in 1994, he held the full chair for Middle and Modern Church History. In 1976/77 and 1980/81 Reinhardt was dean of the Tübingen Catholic-theological faculty . From 1979 to 1998 he was chairman of the history association of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart and editor of the Rottenburg yearbook for church history.

Reinhardt's main research interests lay primarily in church history. Here he devoted himself in particular to the historical relationship between state and church, the history of the imperial church in modern times, the history of the church constitution and especially the history of the Rottenburg diocese in the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to the monographs listed below, his scientific work includes over 150 essays and over 100 lexicon articles. In his works Reinhardt interpreted predominantly political and legal history; he was considered to be rather liberal.

family

Reinhardt was born in Stuttgart as the son of Alfons Reinhardt (1895–1980), a functionary in the Christian trade unions who had lost his position under National Socialism. Although his father had connections to the resistance and, through Joseph Ersing, to the Goerdeler circle , Reinhardt was a member of the Hitler Youth .

Reinhardt's sister Eva-Maria was married to Herbert Czaja .
