Rudolf Rieks

Rudolf Rieks (born April 19, 1937 in Bottrop ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

Rieks studied classical philology at the University of Tübingen (with Wolfgang Schadewaldt and Ernst Zinn ). In 1964 he was with a thesis Humanitas principle in the 1st century AD.. His doctorate , which three years later under the title Homo humanus, humanitas: To Humanity in Latin literature of the first century AD was printed. Rieks achieved his habilitation in 1973 at the Ruhr University in Bochum , where he was appointed adjunct professor in 1975. In 1978 he moved to Bamberg University as an associate professor , where he has been active in teaching and research ever since. In 1994 he was promoted to full professor, and in 2002 he retired. His successor on the professorship was Thomas Baier , who moved to Würzburg in 2008.

At the center of Rieks' research work is the Roman literature under questions of form, genre theory, philosophical and historical effects. He published several articles on the reception of Roman literature in French literature of the early modern period.
