Rudolf Rometsch

Rudolf Rometsch (born November 9, 1917 in Basel , † July 7, 1997 in Grindelwald ) was a Swiss chemist who worked in the nuclear industry.

Rometsch was born the son of an official. He studied physical chemistry and received his doctorate in 1943 at the University of Basel with studies on optically active diphenyl compounds . After 1945 he set up a laboratory for radioisotopes for the pharmaceutical company Ciba and worked for a time at the ETH Zurich. In 1959 he was appointed head of the research department at Eurochemic in Mol , Belgium . From 1964 to 1969 he was the managing director of the reprocessing plant . He then went to Vienna as Deputy General Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency . As head of the main department for security measures and inspection, he played a key role in setting up the Safeguard inspection control system. From 1978 to 1988 he was President of the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) .
