Rudolf Schmidt (born November 24, 1894 in Vienna ; † April 19, 1955 there ) was an Austrian entrepreneur and inventor.

Live and act

After completing his school education, Schmidt initially started as a trainee in the steel processing company 'Rudolf Schmidt & Co.' based in Vienna. one that his father Rudolf Schmidt (1865–1928) founded in 1892 together with Hugo Rosenthal (1858–1949). After the First World War , Schmidt (the younger) worked for a Swedish import company for ores in Düsseldorf , where he last held the position of authorized signatory. In 1921 he returned to his father's company by taking over the management of the Düsseldorf plant, which under his leadership was relocated to Berlin in 1923 . After his father's death, from 1929 onwards, he was in charge of the entire company in Vienna, which in the meantime had been converted into Österreichische Schmidt Stahlwerke AG. He was active in this function until his death in 1955.

Schmidt gained particular fame with his invention of TOR steel , which he patented in 1935 and 1936. TOR steel, a reinforcing steel for concrete that is cold-twisted by torsion , has since formed the fundamental basis for reinforced concrete construction .

Schmidt is buried in the family grave at the cemetery in Hinterbrühl in Lower Austria.
