Rudolf Spemann

Rudolf "Rudo" Spemann (born April 22, 1905 in Würzburg , † July 11, 1947 in Schepetiwka ) was a German type designer and calligrapher .

Life

From 1924 he studied at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich with Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke and Emil Preetorius , and one year later he switched to Friedrich Hermann Ernst Schneidler at the Stuttgart Art Academy , where he worked as an assistant from 1930. In 1935 he moved to Munich as a freelance graphic designer . From 1937 he was a lecturer at the Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Trade in Leipzig for Walter Tiemann for two and a half years . In 1939 he volunteered as a war volunteer , and in 1947 he died in Shepetivka, Ukraine as a prisoner of war .

From 1929 he drew for the satirical weekly magazine Simplicissimus . The Gavotte font he designed appeared in the Klingspor brothers' type foundry in 1940 and is now sold by Linotype . The Spemann family donated his estate to the Klingspor Museum in Offenbach am Main when it was founded in 1953. Two of his calligraphies were included in the Berlin Calligraphy Collection at the Academy of Arts .

Rudo Spemann Prize

In 1954, in return for the transfer of the estate, the city of Offenbach awarded the Rudo Spemann Prize, which has been awarded every two years since then and which has been advertised internationally since 1979. It is aimed at people who are in the process of writing training.
