Life

Rudolf Wessel was born in Bassum in 1825 under the Kingdom of Hanover . In his place of birth he built - initially only with the production of a Mr. Schmidt from Celle as a competitor - from 1839 to 1840 one of the first factories in the country for the production of candles from stearin instead of the previously exclusively used beeswax . His industrially produced “stearic acid lights”, arsenic- free products, were characterized by their almost soot-free combustion. Wessel presented his candles, as well as the “Wallrathlights” produced in his factory, at the 4th trade exhibition of the Kingdom of Hanover in 1840 and was awarded the bronze medal for his products.

In 1858 a brickworks was built in the village of Limmer in front of Hanover - on Wunstorfer Straße in the area of what will later be the Continental AG parking lot : As a steam brick owner in Limmer, Rudolf Diesel, who came from Bassum, now also owned the plot of land that was followed by Wesselstraße , the later Dieselstrasse was marked out in order to build the small houses for the oldest workers' housing in the former village.

Rudolf Wessel died on October 7, 1879 in Hanover.
