Rudolfo Anaya
Rudolfo Alfonso Anaya (born October 30, 1937 in Pastura near Santa Rosa , New Mexico , † June 28, 2020 in Albuquerque ) was an American writer who was often named as the founder of Chicano literature , i.e. the literature of Mexican Americans becomes.
biography
After attending Albuquerque High School , he studied English at the University of New Mexico (UNM) and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA English) and then in 1968 with a Master of Arts (MA English). He then accepted a professorship for English studies at the University of New Mexico and taught there until his retirement .
Anaya made his literary debut in 1972 with the youth novel Bless Me, Ultima (1972), the story of a Chicano boy in New Mexico in the 1940s. He subsequently published the novels Heart of Aztlan (1976), Tortuga (1979), The Silence of the Llano (1982) and The Legend of La Llorona (1984), before he started a collection in 1986 with A Chicano in China (1986) edited of essays .
After the books The Anaya Reader (1995) and Rio Grande Fall (1996), he published several other novels with Shaman Winter (1998), Alburquerque (1999) and Zia Summer (2000), the start of a four-part cycle about the private detective Sonny Baca . His works have also been translated into German , for example by Barbara Traber .
Anaya was also politically active and was a supporter of Democrat John Kerry in the 2004 US presidential election . He died in New Mexico in late June 2020 at the age of 82.
