Rueland Frueauf the Younger (* around 1470 presumably in Salzburg ; † 1547 in Passau ) was a painter at the transition from Gothic to Renaissance and the son of Rueland Frueauf the Elder .

An early work is the crucifixion picture from 1496, which is still Gothic . A series from 1499, however, is influenced by Dutch painting.

One of his best-known works, also one of the most important of the early 16th century , is the so-called Leopold cycle from 1505. The series of four pictures originally probably formed the wing of an altar. The reason for the creation of the work was the translation ceremony of the margrave , which was celebrated on February 15, 1506 in a festive form.

A large picture from 1507 showing St. Leopold has been repainted. All of these works and thus the majority of the surviving pictures are in the museum of Klosterneuburg Abbey .

The painter is an important representative of the artistic direction of the Danube School .
