location
La Ruinette is located in the western Valais Alps, east of the Lac de Mauvoisin reservoir , which is located at the end of the Val de Bagnes valley . Nestled between the Brenay Glacier ( Glacier du Brenay ) in the southeast and south and the Giétrogletscher ( Glacier du Giétroz ) in the north, the summit itself is largely free of ice. The southern canopy is formed by the small Ruinette Glacier ( Glacier de la Ruinette ).
La Ruinette is located around two kilometers southwest of the Mont Blanc de Cheilon ( 3870 m above sea level ), which is only a few meters lower , with which it is connected via its northeast ridge ( IV , combined).
history
The first ascent took place on July 6, 1865 by Edward Whymper and the mountain guides Christian Almer and Franz Biner , eight days before the first ascent of the Matterhorn . Their route led over the southwest ridge according to today's normal route .
Routes
The normal route to the Ruinette leads from the Chanrionhütte ( 2462 m ) via Col and Lac de Tsofeiret to the Col de la Lire Rose ( 3115 m ), from there over the shoulder ( 3386 m ) to the small Ruinette glacier and over it into a saddle at the beginning of the rocky southwest ridge. You can reach the summit directly on the south-west ridge with easy but exposed climbing.
There are routes over the other ridges and through the walls, but these are much less common than the normal route.
