Rümelingen ( Luxembourgish Rëmeleng , French Rumelange ) is a city and a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and belongs to the canton of Esch an der Alzette .

History and sights

Rumelange has been an independent municipality since 1892 and was granted city status in 1907 .

The place is dominated by the parish church of St. Sebastian. The stately church, built between 1894 and 1896 according to plans by the architect Jean-Pierre Knepper, is one of the best preserved neo-Gothic sacred buildings in the Grand Duchy in terms of its construction, furnishings and decoration .

National Museum of Luxembourg Iron Ore Mines

The museum, a project in particular by the mayor André Zirves and the two aldermen Will Hoffmann and Jean Krings, opened on May 4, 1973. The collection includes tools, machines and archival documents related to iron ore mining from the mid-19th century to the 1980s.

The museum is partially set up in a disused mine shaft 106 meters below the surface over a length of 900 meters.

The company MMR-A, which shared the mining concessions on the Rümelinger Bann with the steel company ARBED , had offered the “Walert” mine, which is not far from the city center. In "Walert" on February 12, 1935 the trade unionist, mayor and member of parliament Jean-Pierre Bausch had a fatal accident.

In the machine hall of the MMR-A an exhibition about the mining industry was set up as well as a small restaurant with sanitary facilities. A playground with a small train was created and the tour through the tunnels was expanded. Then a forge was set up in the machine shed, which is run by the art smiths of the Hephaestus Association. Finally, the two trains that drive visitors three kilometers through the facilities are also located here, past the former “Rembour” pits through a forest to the “Laangegronn” mine, where the trains enter the tunnel.
