Rund um den Michel is a television magazine that shows reports related to Hamburg and is broadcast once a month on NDR television . The show is moderated by Julia-Niharika Sen.
Content and charisma
The program is broadcast every four weeks on Sundays from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. on NDR television, with a sequence consisting of around ten to twelve individual contributions. The magazine serves both entertainment and information. According to its own presentation, it shows "funny, exciting, thoughtful and weird stories from the heart of Hamburg life". Often they are current short reports about people who live and work in Hamburg. Occasionally, celebrities with a connection to Hamburg are portrayed such as Udo Lindenberg , Heidi Kabel , Karl Lagerfeld , Lilo Wanders , Jan Fedder and Verona Feldbusch .

The conception of the program was initially based to a certain extent on the NDR documentary magazine Rund um Big Ben (1981-2006), which showed cheerful, bizarre or thought-provoking stories from London . Analogous to Big Ben as a well-known landmark of London, the title also refers to Michel, who stands for Hamburg .
The first broadcast took place on January 4, 1991 in what was then the joint third television program of NDR, Radio Bremen and Sender Freies Berlin . Birgit Schanzen , who also had the idea for Rund um den Michel , initially took over the moderation .
The quota was constant at around 500,000 viewers when the program was seriously redesigned in 1998. Their new motto was “From Hamburg to the world”. Schanzen and her team, consisting of ten freelancers, now portrayed former Hamburg residents who had built up an existence abroad. The opening and closing credits of the show as well as the graphics have also been redesigned.
At the beginning of 2000 Victoria Voncampe took over the moderation of the show, which has now returned to its original concept and showed stories from Hamburg. Another change was that Rund um den Michel was moderated live.
In 2011 an anniversary broadcast on the 20th anniversary of the magazine (now hosted by Susann Atwell ) was broadcast, the program items of which included "Best of Birgit Schanzen" and "20 years of celebrities in the 'Michel'".
